Tough tomboy Watts (Mary Stuart Masterson) and sensitive artist Keith (Eric Stoltz) are two best friends from the wrong side of the tracks. They hang out at the garage where Keith works to earn money for college, even though he only wants to go to art school. One of Keith's favorite subjects to draw is one of the most popular girls in school, Amanda (Lea Thompson), while Watts has more than just friendly feelings towards Keith. His obsession with Amanda leads Keith to ask her on a date, leaving Watts confused and jealous. Will Keith be able to breach the popularity divide and be with Amanda or will he realize that love was right beside him all along?
