Annie Braddock (Scarlett Johansson) can't find a job after graduation from college, but is too humiliated to move back home. So she takes a job as a nanny for a wealthy couple with one child on the upper East side of Manhattan, thinking it will only be temporary. To add to her humiliation, she meets a guy in the same building whom she names Harvard Hottie (Chris Evans) and she doesn't want to let him know of her subservient job. Just as her employers Mr and Mrs X (Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney) live a life keeping up appearances, Annie is caught up in the same life-style and cannot even tell her own mother what is really going on in her life until she desperately needs her help to care for the child. Having studied anthropology, Annie describes her experience and the lessons she learns as if studying a sub-culture of human beings she has been observing so long she loses her objective perspective.
