Steve Finch (Matthew Broderick) is an eye doctor and family man. He wants to have a traditional christmas with his children until Budy Hall (Danny Devito) and Tia Hall (Kristen Chenoweth), the new neighbors, arrive whith their children. The two families intertwine almost immediately as the children and wives become instant friends. Unfortunately, Steve and Buddy do not warm to each other so quickly. Buddy's goal is to light up his house with so many Christmas lights that it is visible from space. Steve's goal is to stop him at what ever cost possible. As they battle, they begin to bring their world into physical ruins.
