Andrew Wyke (Michael Caine) is a mystery writer, who has a fascination for games, game-playing, and gamesmanship. But his favorite game is to play with people. Milo Tindle (Jude Law) is a struggling actor who is having an affair with Andrew's wife. Andrew summons Milo to the estate for a meeting. Milo is detested by Andrew for his lack of heritage and refinement. But Andrew has a little scheme for Milo. Andrew is willing and happy to give up his wife, but only if he can be sure she'll stay gone. Wanting his wife to be supported in the way she has become accustomed, Andrew suggests that Milo steal the Wyke jewels and pawn them in Amsterdam. Milo will have a small fortune while Andrew collects the insurance. But it's a ruse. While Milo begins to steal the loot, Andrew pulls a gun and says that he can now legally shoot Milo as an intruder which he does. Thus begins an even deadlier game of cat-and-mouse as the police try to figure out where Milo is and why Andrew seems involved.
